Not the Queen of England....
I grew up listening to Queen. By the age of seven, I was howling, "Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me," a little off key and without having a clue of what that meant.
Here's a great song for anyone struggling to overcome any adversity (like getting to the end of that WIP).

This post is part of the 2012 A to Z Challenge. I am quite behind visiting everyone. I hope to be caught up soon....
I think your assessment of the song's meaning is spot-on.
ReplyDeleteHe's wearing an outrageous (and awesome) spandex unitard. No way he's singing about a football victory! :)
DeleteQueen taught me how to head bang!
ReplyDeleteHappy A to Z
Another good post. Yes. Our fight as writers is to keep on writing and polishing what we do.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Shelly. I think we are champions for moving forward every day despite the odds being stacked against us.
DeleteGreat outfit he has on! Really like his chest!
ReplyDeleteI remember that song; yes - I think he is referring to the human spirit and never giving up no matter what we go through!

There were later clips without the spandex, but he looked like he was sick of singing it and had quite a display of beer bottles on the piano. Not as fun as the unitard.
DeleteI love Queen! And although the song is fun at sporting events and the like, I think you're right about the song's true meaning.
ReplyDeleteI got really sick of hearing it for sports and before I listened to the lyrics.
DeleteMy wife's favourite group; even I will admit to liking them and Freddy.
ReplyDeleteThey've got some great songs.
DeleteI love Queen. Bohemian Rhapsody is one of those songs I never get tired of hearing.
ReplyDeleteI used to get so annoyed with We Are the Champions being played so often, but when I really thought about the lyrics, I realized how true they were. Great post.
ReplyDeleteMe too. It seemed like bragging to play it at a football game. But it's not what it's about at all.
DeleteI saw Queen in concert when I was in high school. It was a memorable show! My family catches me singing along to "Somebody to Love" more often than they'd like to, I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteThat would have been AWESOME to see them live!!
DeleteLove that song and I agree - it's definitely suited for writers encountereing daily adversity and conquering it!
ReplyDeleteI think we have to celebrate our daily succeses.
Delete"We Are the Champions" was actually one of my LEAST favorite Queen songs, lol!
ReplyDelete"Bohemian Rhapsody" (now forever envisioned in my mind with Wayne and Garth lip-syncing and head-banging), "Keep Yourself Alive," "Killer Queen," "Tie Your Mother Down," and the Brian May solo parts of "We Will rock You" are my personal favs.
Bohemian Rhapsody will always be my favorite.
DeleteI still miss Freddie. He had such a voice. I loved Queen. I got to see them in concert in the 70's. Awesome.
ReplyDeleteThat must have been amazing.
DeleteQueen's music is so powerful, and that song will never die. I prefer your interpretation, as it relates to writing, versus its overuse in the world of professional sports.
ReplyDeleteGlad Alex gave you a shout-out. That's why I'm here.
Be well.
Alex is awesome! :)
Deletei used one of queens songs in my second posts on the a-z blogging--great group
ReplyDeleteI've always loved Bohemian Rhapsody. When my boys were teens and often cranked up their music a little too loud, I grew attached to certain artists and songs which ordinarily I would never have listened to.
ReplyDeletePatricia
My older kids love classic 70's and 80's rock, and my little one likes hippy music. :) I can't listen to most of what my teen listens to - gives me a headache.
Delete've seen quite a few posts about that awesome rocking band Queen today. Freddie Mercury is one of the Top Ten lead men of all time in my books.
ReplyDeleteDid you know in 2007 Brian May completed his PhD thesis in astrophysics?
No I didn't. That's very unexpected.
DeleteQueen rocks! One of my favs is their duet with David Bowie in the song, Under Pressure.
ReplyDeleteI like that one too.
DeleteLove Queen. Great take on the song.
ReplyDeleteQueen was the best. Great post.
ReplyDeleteMy Q is "Quoth the Raven, 'Nevermore!'"

I love Poe - I will definitely check it out.
DeleteLove that song! You are so right and when I listen to it...I feel empowered.
ReplyDelete:-) Visiting from over at Alex's place. Looking forward to reading more of your posts. Have a great day!
Fantastic song and group!
ReplyDeleteI agree. I don't think the song had anything to do with winning a sports competition.
Heather
Definitely not.
DeleteI never get tired of that song, and I think your assessment is totally correct. Love it. :)
ReplyDelete:)
DeleteOnly he could pull off that "spandex unitard!" Great post and I also like Queen. It's interesting when you think about origins of songs and what they later become known for! BTW, I also agree with Alex! Julie
ReplyDeleteThanks. :)
DeleteHopping over from A-Z ( saw you from ALex's page). Anyway, you simply can't go wrong with Queen. Always love rockin' out with them!

I fracking love Queen (Her Majesty and this lot). I think my favourite is Don't Stop Me Now - excellent road trip song!
ReplyDeleteAh yes, Queen. They have some right catchy tunes!

I sang that song in the chorus in high school. Everyone tried to shout over everyone else. It was bad.
