Q is for Queen

Not the Queen of England....

I grew up listening to Queen.  By the age of seven, I was howling, "Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me," a little off key and without having a clue of what that meant.

Here's a great song for anyone struggling to overcome any adversity (like getting to the end of that WIP).

I always hear this song for sport events.  I don't think they meant champions in quite that way.  I think it's about celebrating daily victories over circumstances or people that threaten to hold us down, maybe even battles within ourselves.  For writers, it's about paying our dues, writing our chapters, editing them over and over again, accepting critiques and correcting our mistakes - "fighting 'til the end."

    1. He's wearing an outrageous (and awesome) spandex unitard. No way he's singing about a football victory! :)

  3. Another good post. Yes. Our fight as writers is to keep on writing and polishing what we do.

  4. Great outfit he has on! Really like his chest!

I remember that song; yes - I think he is referring to the human spirit and never giving up no matter what we go through!

    1. There were later clips without the spandex, but he looked like he was sick of singing it and had quite a display of beer bottles on the piano. Not as fun as the unitard.

  5. I love Queen! And although the song is fun at sporting events and the like, I think you're right about the song's true meaning.

  8. I used to get so annoyed with We Are the Champions being played so often, but when I really thought about the lyrics, I realized how true they were. Great post.

    1. Me too. It seemed like bragging to play it at a football game. But it's not what it's about at all.

  9. I saw Queen in concert when I was in high school. It was a memorable show! My family catches me singing along to "Somebody to Love" more often than they'd like to, I'm sure.

  11. "We Are the Champions" was actually one of my LEAST favorite Queen songs, lol!

"Bohemian Rhapsody" (now forever envisioned in my mind with Wayne and Garth lip-syncing and head-banging), "Keep Yourself Alive," "Killer Queen," "Tie Your Mother Down," and the Brian May solo parts of "We Will rock You" are my personal favs.

  13. Queen's music is so powerful, and that song will never die. I prefer your interpretation, as it relates to writing, versus its overuse in the world of professional sports.

Glad Alex gave you a shout-out. That's why I'm here.

    Be well.

  15. I've always loved Bohemian Rhapsody. When my boys were teens and often cranked up their music a little too loud, I grew attached to certain artists and songs which ordinarily I would never have listened to.

    1. My older kids love classic 70's and 80's rock, and my little one likes hippy music. :) I can't listen to most of what my teen listens to - gives me a headache.

  16. 've seen quite a few posts about that awesome rocking band Queen today. Freddie Mercury is one of the Top Ten lead men of all time in my books.

Did you know in 2007 Brian May completed his PhD thesis in astrophysics?

  21. Fantastic song and group!
I agree. I don't think the song had anything to do with winning a sports competition.

  23. Only he could pull off that "spandex unitard!" Great post and I also like Queen. It's interesting when you think about origins of songs and what they later become known for! BTW, I also agree with Alex! Julie
