Christmas Already?

Last night two Christmas shows were on TV simultaneously - Elf and How the Grinch Stole Christmas.  What's up with that?  It's too soon.  Way too soon.

I turned off the TV and went to settle my little guy who was thinking it was too soon to go to sleep.  I know this because he was screaming, "I'M NOT READY!!"

What did I sing?  "Santa Claus is Coming to Town."  Yes, I did.  But not because I want Christmas to be here tomorrow - it's his sleepy song, the one magical song of the moment that relaxes him.  We have the movie on DVD, the one with the Winter Warlock.  It's my son's favorite year round, not because he wants Christmas every day or wants presents - it's just a great story.

Before I sing this or any song at bedtime (a little off key and often improvising the lyrics), I tell him to close his eyes because my singer doesn't work if I see open eyes.  I rub his back and sing it over and over in an infinite loop until his face relaxes and I know he's asleep or almost there.

Over the years, I have discovered the secret to getting kids to sleep is convincing them to close their eyes.  My kids have learned the secret to staying up is keeping them open.  Every night is a battle of control over the eyelids.

I don't have any Christmas pictures to post - because it's way too soon, seriously.  The weather this morning is about 70 degrees, perfect spring weather with the guarantee of some rain.  I'm ready for spring, not Christmas.

  1. I'm not ready for the whole XMas thing either. I think I'll finally get into the spirit around December 23rd.

  2. I'm not ready for Christmas, but I also can't believe Thanksgiving is next week!!

That is so sweet about your son. I miss those moments. My guy is a teenager now and hates it when I try and tuck him in at night. :PP

  3. I agree, it is way too soon for Christmas. Though, everywhere we go there is Christmas decorations hanging already.
I love how you tell your son that your singer does not work when you see open eyes. That is so original and brilliant.

  5. I'm not ready for Christmas, either! The leaves on my trees still haven't fallen! Really: raking leaves comes before stringing lights. I'm just sayin.

  6. That is a good Christmas show. It's among my favorites with Rudolph & The Year w/o a Santa Claus. But yes, it is waaay too early.

  7. Grumpy Bulldog - You and my ex-husband. One year I got a pencil sharpener for Christmas and a 10 pack of yellow number twos. :)

LG - I'm ready to cook some pies, but I can't believe it's next week either. My 10 year old is too cool for tuck-ins too.

Murees - It's way too soon. Tomorrow my little guy will likely inform me that it's illogical. Tiny Spock he is.

Alex - I think two weeks before Christmas is adequate.

Peggy - We have a lawn covered with leaves too. I'd like to get through Thanksgiving first.

MPax - I like Rudolph too. We went to the mall this weekend - not for presents - it was packed like it was the weekend before Christmas. Crazy.

  8. Christmas? I'm still not over last year. I'm pretty sure someone is sneaking around and deleting a month or two out of the year and no one is noticing.

  9. I don't want to think about Christmas. I wish the commercial world wouldn't put such emphasis on spending as much as possible, as soon as possible. Sure puts a damper on all the other holidays . .

I remember the battle of the eyelids days :) Kids are so cute with how they get to sleep.

    ......dhole

  10. Rusty - Funny. :)

Donna - This year, I'm not going to focus on the gifts as much as doing things with my family - like ice skating and light displays.

  12. Lynda - No, you're one of THOSE. :) Our holiday tradition is to put the tree up the weekend after Thanksgiving. And every year my husband can't get the lights to work, so it sits there naked until I have a complete freak out the weekend before Christmas.
