IWSG - December 2014

Sorry, I'm a little late to the party today.

I have so much to say about writing and insecurities - and not enough minutes to write it.

So I will just say this: I think if we feel insecure, we should just keep writing and be open to criticism and keep writing (yes, I said that twice). Every day - or most days - as many days a week as is reasonable in our lives.

I am more myself - the self I want to be - when I write every morning. Unfortunately, today I haven't worked on my novel and am feeling ungrounded and scattered - but that may be because we're moving, and I'm sitting in the middle of a room filled with boxes, which would be unnerving even if I had written for hours. On the up side, I'm getting a room of my own to write in - with a wall of bookshelves and a window with a wonderful (but not distracting) view.

Tomorrow, I must decide the color for the walls - it's a horrible cardboard brown color, and my bookshelves and desk are white. The entry outside of it is sunflower yellow, which limits the colors I can choose unless I want to paint the entry too (I do not).

I am hoping to have that room ready to use by next Monday. In the meantime, I am going to have to live with being scattered and ungrounded and not at all myself.

  1. But think of the cool writing room you will have when you are finished! Yeah, moving sucks until it's over.

  2. It's great to hear from you again! Good-luck with the move. I can just imagine how stressful it can be. On the bright side, you get your own writing room/office. It might not seem like it but getting to set it up just as you want it, including painting it whatever color you want sounds really exciting. Wishing you all the best with the move and painting.

  3. I love the end product, but in the middle of painting, etc. the mess is maddening! Hang in there.

  4. Whether a person is a writer or a secretary or a minister, it's important to be able to reset our priorities and not feel guilty that something needs to be moved to a lower priority. Enjoy the moment, be completely present in the moment, knowing everything will proceed according to your intentions, your vision. LOL = be careful about what you vision.

  5. Ooh, I'm jealous you're getting your own room! I'm sure you'll settle into a routine. Moving is always an odd time. I know what you mean about writing regularly. I worked so hard during NaNo and I've done nothing the last few days and I feel like I'm drifting. It definitely balances me to write every day.

  6. Excellent advice...it always works when I actually follow it...try that pale grey that has just a touch of blue in it...very calm and soothing and it should match well with everything. Best of luck

  7. How about a warm brown -- something with a little gold or red in it?

  8. I get unscarred and ungrounded when things bother me, too. Hope you love your new place and writing room.

    Hugs and chocolate!

  9. Your own writing room? How wonderful is that?
Enjoy the process of watching your own private space come to life. It's an exciting thought!

  10. I know it sounds crazy, but I compare criticism to working out at the gym. To build muscle, you must first tear it and then it grows back stronger. The same goes for our writing talent. That criticism may hurt, but it makes us stronger.

  11. Your own writing room! I'm so jealous. Mind you I do get the house to myself all day Monday through Friday so I guess that makes the whole house like my personal writing room. Still I dream lol. I hope all goes well with your move and that you are back to writing as you like soon. xx

  12. I love the idea of your own room for writing. Mine makes all the difference. It's a small room, which means everything is no more than an arm's length away. A wall of books, research materials--everything. I find calm in this room. I hope you share pictures of yours once it's all set up.

  13. Tearing a room apart is always unsettling, but tearing a writing room apart is catastrophic. It will come together, I'm sure, and I know a new color will give you some inspiration. Good luck.
