Start of Summer Musings

In addition to all the relaxation and fun with my kids I plan to have this summer, I need to get back into the swing of writing and revising.

I need to pick a project and knock it out before moving on to the next.

I need one achievable goal to focus on.

I need to have set times to write.

And I need to leave my house to do it.

I set up a really awesome area on my deck where I can write and read and edit and relax.  But we had hail damage in our neighborhood about six weeks ago.  Everyone is getting new roofs and siding and garage doors.  So it's not relaxing outside anymore.  Maybe I need to bust out the noise-reduction headphones.  I wonder if they will drown out the sound of power tools and hammering.

I have two weeks until the repairs on my house starts.  I'm pretty sure I won't be able to escape the sound of that.

Overall, I'm exhausted from my kids and I being sick for a whole month.  I'm tired and unmotivated.  My Muse is whimpering in a fetal position under my cluttered desk.  Maybe first I need a nap.

  1. Sorry you have all been sick. Noise reduction headphones should at least help.

  2. The headphones sound like a good idea. I get easily distracted by those kinds of noises. Kick that muse, gently, once you've had a nap. One idea to focus on works best for me too, but I do have several projects on the go.

Good luck, but don't push yourself too much. Go gradually.

  3. I like to focus on one project, but have one in reserve that I can work on if/when I get stuck on the first and just need a change of pace for a while.

Noise reducing headphones sound like a great idea.

  4. Headphones are great. The Husband Unit is noisy when he's home. :) Goals help. I'm on a 10K words per week sprint until end of July most like.

  5. I hope the nap was good. You at least have a strategy and a game plan, which is more than I have. Best of luck. I hope you feel better now.

  6. Welcome back, Tonja! Nice that you were able to set up a spot on your deck.

  7. I work best when I'm away from home. I love to sit in the café at the bookstore with an ice coffee and go at it for hours.
