G is for Goldfish

http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/

One of my kids was born a super-hero.  He climbed onto things - tables, counters, swing sets, couches.  And then he jumped.  He never got hurt - he just brushed himself off and climbed up again.  If he wasn't climbing and jumping, he was tunneling - under tables, behind couches, anywhere he could fit.  He did all of this quietly, always acting out some sort of super-hero mission.

At this climbing and tunneling time of his life, we had a goldfish.  His name was Franklin.  He lived on a tall table out of reach of my little super-hero.

One day my little guy had a cold.  I had spent all day wiping his little nose.  When I wasn't looking, he quietly made his way to the fish, climbing the tall chair as if it were the side of a building.  I caught him just after he stuck his snotty little hand into the bowl to try to save the fish.

Two days later the bowl was filled with mucus and the fish was belly-up.  Maybe the slime in the bowl was from something else, but we believe my little guy snotted the fish.  That may have been his third super-hero power - a power terrifying enough to send villains running.

  1. All fish may run (swim) screaming from the sight of him for the rest of his days. LOL. Some kids are fearless. That's great.

    1. Oh no. Gerbils are mean. Now I remember what my G-post was supposed to be - Gerbil. Ours kept escaping.

  3. Oh no! It seems so wrong to laugh, but that's so funny! My fish was nearly taken out of his bowl for a cuddle once by a friend's daughter! LindaK

    1. I think it's funny that a kid would want to cuddle a fish. So sweet.

  5. My daughter had two fishes, she used to like cleaning them out, so one day I suggested buying a bigger bowl for them. She was given a pony and her interest changed. Guess who ended up with cleaning the fish out? lol

    Interesting post.

    1. I fall for it every time. I think that's why we got rid of the gerbil. I couldn't handle cleaning the cage.

  6. Yeah, the boy is riding the line between superhero and fish arch nemesis. Only time will tell...LOL. You're on a mission to gross me out during the challenge, aren't you? Fish snotting. Ugh.

  7. Oh well. I'd say "poor goldfish" but I honestly just can't relate emotionally to a goldfish. I do like the crackers though.

    1. He was an awesome county fair fish that had survived for more than a year before the deadly sliming.

    1. You may know who's to blame, but don't call me to clean them up. Once is enough.

  9. Oh dear! I can see my son doing something like that. Better keep your superhero away from other pets you might have!

  14. loved this. just the kind of memorable musing I myself love to write about -- kids are so darn funny. I hate to admit it, but I was the one that killed our own fish, just didn't change the bowl water enough.....

    1. Fish bowls are nasty things to clean - especially if you wait too long.

  15. My middle son was that same super hero and also the only one who fed the VCR a banana and got a stuck a raisin up his nose. My other kids were never super heroes but they never did all the kooky stuff either. I'm sorry about your snotted fish!

  16. Quite a unique story! Kids do the weirdest things. My son colored his hair purple for Halloween, and then realized that it wouldn't wash out. So we took him to my hairdresser who bleached it white.

  19. Oh dear! Well, if your boy can channel his awesome snot power to fight evil we'll be doing okay :-)

  20. Did he start sneezing on his shoulder after that? With all of the sickening things that float around in fish tanks, you'd think the fish wouldn't seem to mind. The poor little guy was just trying to help. Julie
