Vacation Day 3

Vacation at home (as opposed to vacations at a hotel near the ocean or some other desirable landmark) for me is like herding cats.  Getting the kids to take a shower so we can go somewhere within an hour of the house is like trying to convince a cat to jump in a sudsy bathtub.  It's not fun.  It's all conflict.  I think it would have been better to drive for 12 hours with a back injury with stops every hour, turning it into a painful 18 hour trip in each direction.

Yesterday we went to an amusement park - well, actually the big kids went there for several hours while my husband and toddler went to the park.  The babes had an early afternoon fear of roller coasters.  Not that he's big enough to ride one - he isn't.  But the only thing he could handle was a trip to the park.

In the late afternoon, my husband, babes, and I went to pick up the big kids.  I thought it would be fun to watch the little guy, who had suddenly and inexplicably lost his amusementparkophobia, ride some rides.  We have a wheelchair, which is the only way I can get around on hard walking surfaces where I need to walk more than a couple hundred feet.  Sucks.  But that's how it is. Could be worse.

What I didn't realize is that the majority of the walking surfaces at the amusement park is covered in pavers.  Bumpy pavers.  Pavers that aggravated the problem with my back and my foot.  It was quite unbearable.  My husband wasn't listening to my words and kept going.  My son got to ride three baby rides including an airplane, a swing thing that went around in circles, and a race car.  He was in heaven.  I was in pain.

Our plan for today (finally a beautiful day after three months of perpetual rain) was to go to the zoo.  I remembered the zoo is also covered in pavers.  I reminded my husband the reason we didn't go to the beach was to avoid exacerbating my foot and back problems.  So they are going to go to the zoo without me - not today because they are taking forever to jump into the shower -  but maybe tomorrow.  They will take pictures and I will listen happily when they tell me all about it.  I do look forward to that, but am guessing they may never make it out the door.

On the up side, I finished the revisions to the first six chapters of my new novel and am very happy with it.  I have 9,800 words completed.  Now it's time to write new chapters.

  1. Hope you are having a great vacation! Sounds like you are. Just don't forget the "you" time. It's not selfish, it's wise.

    Best-

  2. Thanks. I did take a much needed break for myself today. My back is feeling much better for it.
