Back in Business

For the past few months, I've been writing very sporadically at my new blog. Migrating hasn't been worth the effort.  So I think I will re-open this blog and do it in a big way by joining A to Z challenge.  Yikes, right?  A to Z is huge, with more than 1800 participants this year; it takes a lot of time to write and read posts and respond to comments on top of everything it takes to participate fully. The upside is there's no better way to reanimate your blog.

Speaking of reanimation, over the last few months, I've been taking a Poe class. I thought I knew Poe, but I was wrong. Now that I've read nearly all of his stories, I feel like I get what he was thinking when he wrote every word. I'm in love with the dying women stories, his themes of reanimation and premature burial, and the connections we (especially women) have with the space we live in.

I am also taking a grant writing class. In my previous work experience, I knew the behind-the-scenes financial and IT components of grant management. The grant writing process is really a very specific genre of proposal writing, which I've been doing for years. The class has been fabulous (and the equivalent of a 20 hour a week job). Now I have much more confidence in my ability to write query letters, which is essentially a business proposal too.

I am convinced that half of the work we do as writers is the creative work of writing. The other half needs to be taking care of business.

For A to Z, I intent to write some short (maybe very short) posts on the business of writing.

I am happy to be back here with you all in a space that feels more like home to me. *Group hug.*

  1. Welcome back, Tonja! Good luck with the letter writing. And perhaps you could enlighten us about Poe in one of your posts.

  2. I definitely will do some posts on Poe. My new bucket-list item is to get an article published in a Poe journal. :)

    1. The beauty part of graduate school is I can apparently write a detailed six page memo in less than an hour because I have to. I was able to mass-produce most of the A-Z posts this afternoon. It was like taking a break. They are short and to the point. I'm thinking people might appreciate that. There's nothing worse than a super long A-Z post (not that I've ever been guilty of that....)

    2. Mercy! This looks to me like proof that motherhood maximizes capabilities. Regardless, I sure am curious to see what your sharp self came up with in one afternoon! See you Tuesday : D

  8. Hi Tonja

Welcome back, it is a great thing for us that you came back to writing and this is good for us to know about the things you did with your past company and what you will do. Finance and business are always a great thing and the greater we go in depth the better we take an interest in the business activities. So we will wait for your next posts.
