Mothery Advice from LG Smith

Earlier this week, LG Smith at Bards and Prophets went into full mommy mode and told me to quit with the blogging already and get to work.  It was just in a comment, but I could see her standing there giving me the same look I give my kids.

Instead of taking her advice, I consumed large amounts of coffee, did some of my homework, wrote a chapter, and read everyone's posts (I hope I got to everyone).  I even cleaned my house and watched some TV.  By bedtime last night, I was ahead of schedule with my homework for the week.  I felt awesome and optimistic.

But because the universe needs balance and loves to mess with me, I woke up feeling incredibly sick.

So I did not do my homework.

I did not write.

I did not clean.

I honestly don't remember if I read a single blog post this morning.

I did let my mind work on my novel while watching a marathon of Say Yes to the Dress.  I clarified my characters and worked out a few scenes.  I'm going to count that as writing for 20 minutes even though I didn't write a word.  Fingers crossed I remember it in the morning - maybe I should jot down some notes or something....

Now I'm super behind on my homework. I need to read one more very dense chapter of literary theory - it's about 25 pages.  I've been getting through the chapters at the rate of about two pages in 30 minutes (yes, I'm paying money for this).  Even though it's a hard read, I can see the benefit of it already - it's helping me look at my stories from new perspectives, which is cool.

Starting now I'll be taking LG's advice.  I will drop out of the blogosphere until I get my homework done and get through the tough part of my novel (the actual writing of the words).

Feel free to scold me if I pop in.  I probably will.

Actually, I do owe Julie Flanders a post to promote her novel - I will get to that next week.  Promise.  Meanwhile, just go to her site and check out her cover and blurb - it looks amazing.

  1. WTH? I just opened my reader and there's my name flashing at me.

Hmmm, I warned you I'm a bossy mother, and now after reading this I feel like grounding you. :P

Just take care of business and get healthy. The blogosphere will still be here when you're caught up. I mean it. Don't make me say it twice...

  2. Hopefully you feel better enough soon to get everything done. There's a reason I haven't bothered with going back to school though.

  3. LOL, sorry you're sick, but this post is hilarious! Now, get to writing, or L.G. will make you stick your nose in the corner! :P

  5. Drop off and do what you need to. I took a three month break in Oct/Nov/Dec and found out that things were pretty much okay, the internet didn't break while I was gone.

  6. Sounds like great advise! I think all that homework sounds very cool... Am I too much of a nerd? Good for you that you are learning such cool things

  7. Tonja, I always love your comments but I also know you have your priorities. If you can't get to reading everyone, hey--you're only human! Make sure you are taking care of you!!

  8. I left the Say Yes to the Dress on for my cat when I left to go out last night and she and the show were still there when I got home. lol

Get your work and writing done, missy. :)

  9. Ah, the joy of finding balance. It's a constant struggle for me, too. You get that work done-- you can do it!

  12. I'm in favor of jotting ideas down as soon as they come to you, especially if you've got kids. Momnesia really messes with one's ability to remember stuff, in my experience. Meanwhile, GOOD LUCK with writing and school and EVERYTHING. I'm not gonna yell at you if you pop in now and again; I'd be bummed if you didn't! :-)

  14. I was good and am just now peeking in. I made it to the 50,000 word milestone! I also got the reading done for my class just under the wire...which involved lots of coffee and a 6 AM alarm this morning - yes, I read literary theory at 6 AM. Awesome. Note to self to never give this link to my professors.

I have a new stack of books to read plus four more chapters of literary theory. I really want to do A-Z, but it probably isn't going to happen unless my fairy godmother brings me a nanny and a housekeeper.

  15. Hope you are feeling better! I caught the crud too and can't believe how long it is hanging on. Feeling pretty unproductive...BUT sometimes we do need that...just time in our head to work through the creative process. :-) You will find the balance.

  16. Oh, you don't owe me anything!! I totally understand that sometimes life gets in the way of our blogging plans. I think you are wise to follow LG's advice!

Just saw in the comments that you made it to 50,000 words so a big cheer for that! :)

  17. Hope you feel better! And I can so relate to your plight. I"ve so much work to do I have no time to do what I really want-- which is work on my book. I'm seriously thinking of LG's advice!
