Post-Christmas Blues

We're having a video game kind of Christmas.  I knew it would be super fun for the family but forgot how disappointed I would be once everyone escaped into their video game worlds and left me behind.  They have begrudgingly come up for air and food once or twice, so it's all good.  But it's been kind of depressing.

Today it occurred to me that if I close their bedroom doors and mine, I can quite likely write in peace and without interruption for the next ten days and make up all the work I didn't do over the last few weeks.  Awesome, huh?

And then I saw my desk.  Four manuscripts, research documents, bills, the remote control, the cordless phone we thought was lost, more bills, college information, picture frames, a spool of thread (as if I sew), binder clips, calendars, random art left by my small one, pens not in the pen holder, two camera bags, two ereaders, stacks of books, and papers covered my desk to the point that I couldn't possibly think a thought through.  It's snowing and icy outside - and I'm wearing sandals - so I decided to clean it.

(I was just interrupted.  My response: "I love you. If you love me, don't talk to me if I'm typing."  It seemed to work.)

At last my desk is clean, fabulously clean and organized.

I have an outline for the second half of my first historical novel (the last in the series).  I'll  be back when I have half of it done.

I hope you all have a wonderfully relaxing (or productive) end of the year.

  1. Hey, depending on the game time of those video games, you might have peace for a very long time. Hope the leftovers hold out.

    1. Small person with small attention span needed me. Maybe today when they go sled riding (I don't do snow).

  2. I'm impressed that you're so organized. Maybe this will motivate me to do some de-cluttering around here. Wishing you and your family a very Happy and Healthy New Year Tonja! Oh, and of course happy writing! Julie

    1. I'm actually feeling incredibly DISorganized (I can see the pile of papers out of the side of my eye - the stack that used to be on my desk).

  3. Good for you!! I should really do some cleaning today. My family is doing the video game thing too! BUT, before I clean, I decided to catch up on reading some blogs. So, here I am. Entertaining myself reading blogs is much more important than cleaning, right? haha

    1. I usually write when I'm home alone - it's difficult to get started with a full house. I feel like procrastinating too.

  5. What's the saying? Never trust a person with a clean desk. Or something to that affect. :D But you have to have space to write at the very least! So just don't clean it too much. lol! Looking forward to the New Year!

    1. Ha. I think I did overclean it. That must be the reason my Muse skipped out on me.

  9. No time for post-Christmas blues here. My sister and her family flew in from Kansas the day after Christmas. We had 1)a second Christmas dinner 2)a second gift-opening 3)experimental flights of the remote control helicopter my brother supposedly bought for my daughters but has been in the hands of my brother and brother-in-law since it was opened and 4)an encore showing of the Doctor Who episode BLINK to explain why my husband glued the treetop angel's hands to her face. And that was only the first day ...

Have fun writing and good luck!

  10. Awesome! I love the idea of taking a big mess and turning it into a nice clean tidy space. I've got to tackle our library...
Ten days of writing sounds exciting!

  11. Cleaning is one of my best forms of therapy. It's funny, but while I'm cleaning I also have creative spurts where I have to put the duster down, run to the laptop and type a paragraph or two!

  12. That sounds so familiar! I wake up nice and early and start writing by hand, but soon get frustrated that everyone else is staying up late at night and sleeping in, so I wake them. Then I regret waking them because I can't write once they get up.
I also get frustrated with the gaming, because it consumes so many hours. I've been making my kids mix it with art projects, creative writing workshops and even grammar worksheets (I know, I'm horrible).
I do need to organise some spaces, I'm a lazy cleaner and tend to do it with a garbage bag and a nonchalant attitude that if I don't see it go in, I won't miss it. Especially if it's bills.

  13. Cleaning helps clear my mind too. I imagine that's what future Christmases will be like around here. The hubby and boy playing their games and me writing. I can deal with it! :) Have a fantastic new year!

  14. No-No moved out so I've been cleaning up her mess in small chunks. Today was her bathroom and whatever she left in the dresser drawers.

Happy New Year! I'll be sending you a copy of Secondhand Shoes on Thursday.

    Hugs and chocolate,
    Shelly

You reminded me that I need to clean clutter off my desk.
