Back to School

This morning was schedule pickup for the high school.  My daughter arranged a ride with her friend, which is kind of terrifying because her friend failed her driving test multiple times.  But I think it's time my daughter should take some initiative and figure out how to do things without my help.

She feels she doesn't need me.  So be it.

Did I mention my daughter and her friend are still asleep?  Luckily there's an afternoon pickup.  I suspect the place will be packed, and I'm glad I don't have to go.

Next week school starts for my older two.  The oldest has to wake up by 6 a.m. to get there on time.  I'm opting out of driving this year.  My fingers are crossed that she will wake up on her own and slip out the door without waking me up.   I really don't want to have to set my alarm for 6 and do the daily battle of coaxing the teen out of bed.

My middle child has been staying up too late.  Tonight I will feed him turkey and let him lay wherever he nods off.  :)

My little guy doesn't start school for 3.5 weeks.  He needs me, which is sweet, but it's a constant need for twelve hours at a stretch, especially while my husband is out of town.  The kid doesn't nap.

I need to figure out how to write for an hour a day with my little sidekick.  I may bust out bribes rewards if he doesn't interrupt me for an hour.  Maybe I should get a reward too.  If I can even just edit one chapter a day, that would be huge.

No one else is going to help me out with this, so I hope my little guy will.

    1. The grocery store sells already cooked rotisserie turkey. :) My plan is to wear them out today before dinner and then put on something slow and boring like Bambi or the news.

  2. I go back to work a week from tomorrow. I have four days of in-service, and students arrive the following Monday. This will be the first time I have no daughters going to the intermediate school with me in seven years. Both of them have moved on -- one will be a sophomore and the other is starting middle school.

I got a lot of writing done this summer, so I can't complain. But I do feel sad.

  3. I was already giggling and then I read Alex's comment and burst out laughing. I can't even imagine having kids and the work that is involved. You definitely deserve a reward!!! Wine, chocolate, whatever your heart desires. :-)

  4. I had a huge laugh when I read, "did I mention my daughter and her friend are still asleep?" Ah, yes... the joys of parenting a teen. I have high hopes, but I fear your crossed fingers will come to naught. Been there; done that! ;^)

Here's hoping that school brings a little peace and quiet, and productive writer-time for you, Tonja!

  5. I'm glad I'm done dragging teens out of bed for school. Hope you find that hour.

  6. Oooh, a reward for your little guy's cooperation is a smart idea! Maybe some special mommy time for after an hour's uninterrupted work? Good luck with that! :-)

  7. I remember when I started getting out of the house without waking my mom. :) She was very happy about that. :D

  8. I hope you find a little alone-time... just you and your one chapter.
I say bribe the kid if needs be... it would be justifiable bribery. LOL

  9. I love bribes. Maybe it's bad, but I can't think of much that works better with kids than a good bribe.

  10. Ah, the age where they think they don't need us and we have to learn to be more subtle.

Hope your little guy finds something to occupy himself with for awhile.

  11. Our kids go start school tomorrow. Exciting times for us. I'm always nervous when they're here all summer, all that idle time leads to no good.
