A Cool Change

This morning on my way back home after dropping off my teen at school, this song came on the radio.

When this song first started playing, I was immediately struck by the fluidity of the lyrics, and then they sang this line:

"I know it may sound selfish, but let me breathe the air."

Today, I have three hours that are not pre-arranged.  I don't know about you, but when I get lost in writing, I temporarily forget about the other obligations in my life: the perpetual laundry pile, the dishes, the grass, the list of to-do's for the week, everything that everyone else needs me to do.

When I'm writing, I can breathe the air.  This morning I choose to write.  Selfish or not, I'm going to set aside everything else so I can breathe.

I need to drop out of here for a while so I can get my MS done before vacation.  I only have a handful of chapters left to edit and another handful to write.  I have absolute confidence I'm going to get it done and an equal amount of confidence my house is going to be a disaster until I do.  Whatever.

  1. Now that I have Glowstick, I take the time to breathe between the hours of 8 to 10:30 pm. In the morning after he falls asleep after his morning bottle...I try to stay up with the blog reading/commenting.

Another blogger suggested free-writing 15 minutes a day if life is hectic. I'm going to start doing this as well.

And I'm considering doing hair in my home and offering editing and proof-reading services so I can stay home with Glowstick. It's not paying to pay a babysitter. It's pretty much my whole paycheck.

    1. If we lived close, we could help each other out with the babies. Mine isn't exactly a baby anymore, but I can't write when he's home with me. It's amazing how expensive child care is.

When things get hectic here, I try to edit a few paragraphs of whatever I'm working on to keep my head in it until I have more time.

  2. It's not selfish at all. You need some YOU time so that you can recharge your batteries, be creative, and clean out all the toxins from the never-ending "gottas" that clog you up during the day.

Not to be all metaphysical, but for lack of a better way to describe it, there's got to be some inward flow of energy in our lives. Even though writing is outward-directed (producing a story or edited MS or whatever), it is also a creative process, and those also pull energy in and through us, I believe. So it's a re-charging process, too.

So it's all good -- write your heart out!

    1. I did. I was able to read through several previous chapters, finished one, and wrote another. So close. And it's exactly what I needed.

  5. Good luck with your writing, and as long as you don't stick to the floor in your house, you'll be fine! I admire your proactive decision! Julie

  7. Hi Tonja!

It's not selfish, but you need to write then you need to write! Simple.

    All the best!

  8. My house is very low on the priority list these days. Go...breathe. Good choice.

  11. Hahaha I can totally relate. I have to stop writing and do some serious house cleaning before the wife comes back.
