Y is for Yesterday

I can't carry a tune, but my babies never minded.  My favorite mommy moments were when I held each of them in my arms and sang to them to stop their crying and calm them down or just send them off to sleep.

Yesterday is the magical song that calmed my little ones the best.  It was like magic.

Whenever my kids hear this song, they remember it was their special baby song.

Apparently a lot of kids don't know the words or lyrics to songs outside of their generation, but my kids do.  Mostly hippy music with some occasional select 70's and 80's rock plays in our house outside the confines of the teen's room, where screamo music and heavy metal live.

There's twelve years between my youngest and my oldest with one in the middle, so I've been singing Yesterday (out of tune and with no respect to the actual lyrics) on and off for about sixteen years.  My littlest is very close to that age where he's going to realize mommy can't sing.  He's about to put his hand over my mouth and ask me to stop.

  1. Somewhere Over the Rainbow and Mr. Sandman are my songs that I sang to my son (out of tune also). Yesterday is a great song. :)

    1. We will need to agree to disagree on the screamo. Whenever I walk in her room, I immediately turn off the volume on her stereo. That must be so annoying for her. :)

  3. Your kids are going to hear the "real" version of Yesterday and wonder what song you've been singing. :P

  4. I don't remember being sung to when I was little, but my mum was a librarian so books were her songs. If/when I have my own little ones I'll sing Hushabye Mountain from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I've got it all planned out :P

    1. Hushabye Mountain is a good one. Kumbaya has been the favorite of my little guy - we make up the words depending on what's going on. Like if he's sick, I sing, 'Someone's coughing (snotting, puking) Lord,' like that.

  5. Ha, ha! My kids got to that "don't sing, Mom" stage, too. Like you, I can't carry a tune but I love to sing. I've decided that the second part of that sentence is the important part. My babies - and yours - agree.

  6. Yesterday is one of those songs that you just have to sing. No matter what. I think when people sing they are happy. So sing as much as you want. It brightens the spirit!

    1. The words are kind of sad, but it is a pretty song.

  7. Paul McCartney was so young and cute. I can see why girls went crazy over the Beetles.

    1. I'm not quite that old to remember that, but I love their music now.

  8. I always liked the song Yesterday, and it's such a wonderful memory to share with your kids. I think your little guy is too smart to try to cover your mouth when you're singing! Julie

    1. Literally, each of my other kids put their hands over my mouth and asked me never to sing again when they were little. My sister and I used to sing out loud when we were teens until my mom begged us to stop. It's not good.

  9. They'll remember that song, if not the words, then the emotion you sing it with.

    1. For me, it was the peaceful moment, holding them in my arms and comforting them with a song. And knowing exactly what to do that made everything better.

    1. Songs lately seem so much less poetic. Or maybe I can't hear the poetry through all the rage or whatever.

  11. Imagine and Yesterday are right up there I reckon. Call me an old fogey but I think screamo will be short lived.....however, the classics will last for generations to come. I like to think I've provided my boys with a bit of 'classic' indoctrination in the hope that the screamo will be seen for what it is. Singing to our babies is one of the sweetest memories I have. Best wishes. Jeff.

    1. My teen loves the classics too. She was the only one in her history class that knew who Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, The Mamas and the Papas, etc., were. Apparently they teach about Woodstock in Honors US History. :)

  12. My Y post was for yesterday too! Except I meant that I was late putting it up, I wasn't referring to the song. Still, pretty cool.
