My husband is part Greek. All the boys in his family were named Xenophon. Luckily, my husband only got it for a middle name. He lovingly tells the story of how his grandmother said, "No more Xenophon!" and didn't allow anyone else to have this crazy name bestowed upon them.
Cute how she said it once, and it was done. I have the impression she was a tiny little woman - I haven't met her, but I love her just from my husband's stories.
This post is part of the 2012 A to Z Challenge.
That would be a difficult first name to live with.
ReplyDeleteTrue, but it's fun to have X for your middle initial. :)
DeleteThat is a great story! That name is so interesting. I can see it as a good character name to hang on to for future reference.
ReplyDeleteIt hadn't occurred to me to use it for a story.
DeleteI've never even heard of ANYONE named that, but personally, I think it's kind of an awesome name. ;^)
ReplyDeleteI think he secretly likes it. :)
DeleteI've never heard that name before. It's great to hear family tales. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat? You didn't pass the name onto your son? It is a mouthful. Kind of a cool name though.
ReplyDeleteNope. No more Xenophon! I say it 'zeenophone' - it's actually pronounced like 'exzanofahn' or something like that - the little guy would get beat up every day.
DeleteShe sounds like my dearly missed mum-in-law, a true matriarch but dearly loved!

I would loved to have seen the interaction between my grandma and his grandma if they had both lived long enough to meet. It would have been priceless. My grandma was quite the matriarch, but the Appalachian variety.
DeleteI've never heard that name before. How funny, the grandmother sounds like a real character. :)
ReplyDeleteLove it. My best friend is Greek. Love her. Xeno for Xenophon would be a cool name too. :)
ReplyDeleteThat would be a good nickname. Or just X. :)
DeleteThat's a great name! I'd wear that on t-shirts and display it proudly. His grandmother probably did all the males a great service with her decree though.
ReplyDeleteIt is the craziest name ever.
DeleteThat's an unusual name. Does it translate into anything in English?
ReplyDeleteI don't think so. I think there was some sort of Greek writer with that name.
DeleteAhhhh gotta love the Greeks for making the "X" part of the challenge so easy lol....mine is a Greek word too lol.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if all words starting with X come from Greece?
DeleteHello, Tonja! Is this true?? How funny! It reminds me of George Foreman naming all of his sons George and his daughter Georgette, LoL.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely weekend and happy A to Z!!
Yep, but I think they had different first names and maybe had Xenophon as a middle name. Everyone didn't have that as their first name I'm sure, pretty sure.
DeleteInteresting. I think it's a kind of cool name. As you know, my X was rather lame. :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a neat family history tidbit.
ReplyDeletemy sister-in-law is greek--great names!
ReplyDeletewow, that's an unusual name. Sounds kinda cool though.
ReplyDeleteThat's cool though. Do you know what the name means?
