Checking Out

It's still springlike here in Ohio.  I kept waiting for a brutally cold winter to return, but it hasn't. My daffodils have popped through the ground and it seems like a good time to get my garden ready.

I bought a great book, Week-by-Week Vegetable Gardener's Handbook.  You enter your own first average frost for your location and add and subtract weeks before and after that date.  The book tells you when to plant particular seeds, start seeds indoors, when to plant outside, and when to do maintenance based on the first frost date.  According to this book, it's officially Late Spring in my neighborhood for gardening purposes.  I'm a little behind schedule planting my spinach seeds.  I highly recommend the book for newer gardeners.

Now that I'm ready to go outside and start digging and planting, I re-injured my foot.  Badly.  By doing nothing except driving and doing laundry and dishes, things I have been doing lately without pain.  My foot trouble began more than two years ago with a stress fracture.  It kind of feels like I have another.

So I'm off my feet for the weekend and am hoping the nerve is just inflamed and nothing worse is wrong.  I'm definitely going to be checked out for a few days if not longer.

My little guy is hanging out with me in bed today.  We've decided to write children's stories.  I have a feeling the stories are going to be about a little boy who loves trains and takes a weekend to hang out with his mama.

  1. First I was happy for your garden outing, then I was sad for your foot. At least you get to cuddle with your little boy and write stories.

    Enjoy your weekend.

    1. We ended up watching PBS most of the morning and had a picnic in bed. I got a migraine that hurts worse than my foot.

  2. Yeah this has been a really wacky winter. There were only a couple of times when around Detroit we got more than an inch of snow. I mean I still haven't had to break out my ice scraper more than once this year. It's freaky.

Too bad about your foot. The big toe on my right foot has been really sore for days and I have no idea what I did to it. Maybe I should just lie in bed all weekend.

    1. You should definitely stay off of it and be a slacker with me.

  3. I love your children's book idea :-)

One thing I will miss while we're traveling is having a garden. I'll probably plant flowers wherever I go :D

    1. I have a survival of the fittest attitude about my flowers - I only have low maintenance ones like daisies. Daisies are very happy in my garden apparently.

I love growing vegetables - very fun to do with my tiny person too. He has tiny tools and helps me.

  4. Sounds like a great book. We had winter all week. Although they claim 60 on Sunday. We'll all melt.

    1. We spent most of our evening in the basement waiting for tornadoes. Today it's freezing out, and now that I'm ready to garden, it's supposed to snow. Perfect.

  5. I've struggled with foot pain since I was 23 or 24 years old. I can't stand or walk for very long before suffering some consequences. So, in a way, I feel your pain. I hope it gets better soon.

    1. I got orthotics for my shoes, which has really helped although it took about 9 months for them to get them right. I'm not sure exactly what I did to make it worse this week. Hope yours gets better.

  6. That last frost of the year seems to be coming earlier and earlier every year, doesn't it? Sorry about the foot. Hope you can get out there and play in the dirt real soon.

    1. Global warming, maybe? I thought it was supposed to be more subtle than this.

  7. My daffodils are up, too. I just hope we don't get a bad frost to kill them. Hope your foot feels better!
