Wrapping up a Bummer Summer

My big kids start school in two weeks.  It has been a very bummer summer for us.  No movies.  No vacation.  No trips to the pool.  We went on one very short trip to the local amusement park - my back was done before we made it through the gates.  The kids and my husband went to the zoo once while I stayed home.

My middle son has some medical issues - he wasn't cleared to do anything fun for the whole month of June, which made for a bad start for all of us.  He was able to perfect his gaming skills and has spent his summer with a controller in his hand.  He has the basement set up so he can watch TV and play a game at the same time (I hang my head in shame).  It's going to hurt when I tell him it's time to emerge from the basement and go into the sunlight.

My back is feeling a bit better, as is my foot - good enough for a short drive and a short walk if nothing else.  I think I can endure sitting through a movie now - I hope we didn't miss everything.

I might be able to drive the kids to the river and take them on a river boat ride - much smoother on my foot and back than a train ride or a roller coaster I'm betting.  I might put fishing poles in my kids hands, bring a couple of umbrellas and a folding chair and head out to the lake to do some fishing.  We need to do something, anything.

I am certain my son will have to write a few paragraphs about the summer the first day of school.  I wonder if the teachers do this to get an impression of the home life of their students.  They are definitely going to get the wrong idea about our family - we have not been ourselves.

To salvage what's left of summer, I'm going to (mostly) drop out of here for a couple of weeks and enjoy my kids before school starts back.

I'm going to use what little time I have after physical therapy and fun with my kids to work on my novels that are in process.  I signed up for a new writing class/group and am anxious to resume writing again now that all of the pain meds are out of my system, now that I feel like myself and have an awesome new back rest for my desk chair.

I hope you all enjoy the last few weeks of summer too.

  2. Glad you're feeling better and still have mobility and lesser pain.

Hey, periods of craptastic happen in life. We all go through them. The important thing, you all made it through in one piece and are ready to leave all that behind.

Enjoy the rest of the summer. Look forward to hearing of your progress on your writing when you return.

  3. @Keena - Thanks

@M Pax - Love the phrase 'craptastic' - so true. I talked to my kids about what they want to do - they are just happy hanging out at home. So we did nothing together. :)

  4. Sigh. I can't believe how fast time flies. I'm getting old so fast I can't keep up. My kids are in high school and I still think of myself as barely old enough to vote. My point? I'm just getting used to the idea that's it's warm outside. I can't believe summer is ending soon. I'm missing some time here.

  8. @Rusty - My oldest is in high school - she was little just a minute ago.

@Lynda - When I was working at a normal job, I thought the work made it go faster. I thought time would slow down a bit at home - not so much.

@Kelly - Thanks for stopping by and for the kind words.

@Laura - I'm sure it has gone quickly for you, with moving and everything you've been working on.

  10. @Alex - Funny! I know it sounds like he's sad to want the basement, but he has three gaming consoles, a TV to watch while gaming, his iPod, and about 100 Lego sets - and snacks. He's in man-paradise. My husband wishes he could hang out down there.
