Y is for Yo-Yo

One of my favorite Dr. Seuss stories is Horton Hears a Who.  If I tried hard enough, I am certain I could recite it from beginning to end.  I love it so much, it is a part of me. My oldest was a little stubborn as a small child and refused to let me read it to her.  I remember night after night trying to convince her it needed to be read.  Eventually she agreed and instantly loved it too.

When I thought about the letter Y, I instantly thought yo-yo.  And yo-yo brought me instantly to the lines about Jo-Jo.

A very small, very small shirker named Jo-Jo
Was standing, just standing, and bouncing a Yo-Yo!
Not making a sound! Not a yipp! Not a chirp!
And the Mayor rushed inside and he grabbed the young twerp!

I am pretty certain this story alone is the one book that inspired me to be a writer.  The beginning is perfection.  The motto - a person's a person no matter how small - is wonderful.  He even fit in a boiling pot of Beezle-Nut stew.  It's pure genius.
