The Business of Writing: Duplicity
Not that definition of duplicity! I'm referring to the old school (perhaps archaic) definition - doubling. Maybe duality is a better word.
What I mean by duplicity and duality in terms of the business of writing is that we as writers have to be two things and do them in equal proportions. We must be writers and business managers. We must use the creative side of our brain in the one endeavor and the logical side for the other. Although our inclination is to be creative, I'm convinced we must manage the business side to be financially successful in this business, regardless of what route we take to publication: traditional, small press, or self-publishing.

Sometimes I think my logical side takes over.

DeleteTotally agree about the business side. Unfortunately I suck at that.
ReplyDeleteI bet you don't suck at it. It's probably a lot like taking care of business at work.
DeleteCan't I just hire somebody to take care of business...?
ReplyDeleteProbably can. I bet well-paid authors do. I don't expect to make enough money to pay an assistant.
DeleteYeah, that's what worries me. :P
ReplyDeleteYou seem like you totally have it together. If you are organized enough to do all the research you've done, you aren't going to have a problem.
DeleteSo many writers think they can't even attempt the business side, but having the discipline to write is a great basic competency that helps in running a business. And creativity is important for a business to thrive also.
ReplyDeleteAwesome series theme. I'll be back!

Thanks. I think we all can do it too. If we are smart and disciplined enough to create worlds, we can manage the business side of things. One step at a time.
DeleteThat duplicity is one of the most frustrating things for some, and exciting for others. I'm kind of half and half on it, some days I really love the business side of it, others I want it to all go away.
