E is for Egg salad
When my oldest was tiny, she went to all-day daycare that was on-site where I worked. The center was great, and the room and teachers were wonderful, except for one thing - they wouldn't cut my daughter off at lunch time after she ate a reasonable amount of food.
Once they told me she ate three bananas with her lunch - three bananas!?
She wasn't overweight, and it wasn't abusive at all. They just had a policy that if a child wanted seconds, they got it. And mine got thirds.
One day, the daycare served egg salad and peaches for lunch with peaches on the side. They gave her three servings...of both.
Later that evening, she was in her crib at one corner pointing at the far corner, yelling, "Sick! Sick!"
Sick in baby-speak is vomit. Lots of it. Peach and egg salad vomit, specifically.
I scooped her up and put her in the tub while my husband scraped the vomit off the bedding and put it in the washing machine...or that's what I thought. Instead he put the sheets right in the washer with the egg salad and peach chunks. And then he put it in the dryer.
I will never, ever forget the smell.
We have never even considered eating egg salad again, and I can't look at a diced peach (or vomit) without thinking about that day.
Funny what sticks in our mind and how we keep associating smells with certain memories or the other way around.
ReplyDeleteThat daycare might make it sound like they have the child's best interest at heart, but they were just being lazy. That sounds horrid. I do love an egg salad sandwich though.
ReplyDeleteNothing like throw up to ruin a food. My sister didn't even sausages for over a decade after throwing them up. Yuck!
ReplyDeleteEwww...no egg salad for me for lunch!
ReplyDeleteOh, that's disgusting!!! Bet you never wanted to eat either of those foods again.
ReplyDeleteOh, thanks so much for sharing. Just sitting down to lunch. :P
ReplyDeleteSorry - I should have given a warning at the start of this one.
ReplyDeleteI took my daughter to the Dr one day because she kept being sick. In the waiting room, a lady opened a huge handbag on the floor and started looking for something, my two year old walked over and threw up her breakfast straight into it. I couldn't go back to that waiting room without panicking in case the lady was there.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was pregnant, now eons ago, I couldn't stand the smell of the meat section of the market. I sitll can't, as if I'm still pregnant.
ReplyDeleteTotally TFF. I remember the day I took my girls to the park and bought a box of Dunkin Donuts. I thought it would be cool to eat breakfast at the park and play afterwards.
ReplyDeleteNow my youngest, Summy-Sum, ate about 5 donuts. After, her and her sisters spun around on the merri-go-round. Needless to say, she puked on the closest sister.

I remember those days!
ReplyDeleteI'm laughing so hard righ now. Been there, not with eggs though. Egg salad can be tricky too. Too funny. Thx for the laugh.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't sure if this post was too gross. All your puking stories are making me giggle. Apparently I have the sense of humor of an eight year old boy.
ReplyDeleteYuck... I think many people are like that, associating smells and experiences together. Reminds me of when I couldn't eat, smell or hear the word pancakes, sausage. Someone that I loved dearly would always go with me to IHop and we'd eat pancakes and sausage.
ReplyDeleteI am stopping by via the A - Z Challenge link up, following you via GFC. Feel free to stop by my blog at http://www.scatteredmusings.net/2012/04/buying-car/ (my b- c and d post combined)
1. YUCK!!
ReplyDelete2. What a significant memory!
Interesting how SMELLS will stick with us for a long time and certain foods will trigger memories.
Awwww. Poor kid. No room for all that food!

*shivers* I ALREADY wasn't a fan of egg salad. Well... if I weren't too frightened to try it. I hate eggs, and I really only tolerate mayonnaise in very small doses--a fine layer on the bread, fine, but don't stir it up with the other content (can't eat chicken salad or tuna for that reason and I LIKE those meats, if mayo-free). So I'm very glad you weren't singing the praises... your poor baby... (poor you)
ReplyDeletepoor little girl.....
ReplyDeleteEwww! Did you have to share that just before Easter? LOL. That had to be pretty disgusting!
ReplyDeleteThe stories we have from the days of raising kids. I remember my little girl getting sick in her bed. She told me birds flew in her window and pooped in her bed.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love egg salad but I think it will be a while before I can eat it again. I have to admit I laughed out loud at your husband and the sheets. Easy for me to laugh since I didn't have to be around the smell. :D
ReplyDeleteWith the obesity epidemic, you would think that a conscientious daycare would monitor a child's eating. This is horrific. I would be very upset that they just let my child eat until he or she was full. Moderation I think is the key to staying healthy. There are many times when I am not full but I step away from my meal. I know that if I don't, my pants won't fit.
ReplyDeleteI'm swallowing hard to prevent the lump from rising in my throat. What a smell memory!
ReplyDeleteugh! You poor thing - just reading this is making me feel a bit queasy! I hope you explained that to the day care the next day - nicely, of course.

I'm glad I never liked egg salad! Julie
ReplyDeleteSorry to gag you all. I'm running behind on everything today - will visit your blogs later this evening if I haven't already.
ReplyDeleteI did want to say I did talk to the people at the center. It's incredibly unusual for a toddler to overeat - I'm no nurse, just a mommy. I feel lucky if my little guy eats three bites of anything at any meal. One green bean is a miracle. I think my daughter was the exception.
And she's never had an issue with weight - probably because she loved fruit and vegetables.
She had a fever that evening, which is why she threw up. She didn't eat until she puked - there was just a lot of it because she had eaten so much. There I go gagging everyone again.
Oh poor you!I've never had a problem with vomit itself, it's the lumps that make me want to heave!
ReplyDeleteLove it! This is the first Egg Salad post I have ever read. Of course, I will never see egg salad the same. But then again, puke can do that to you!
ReplyDeleteI bet you can't. I hope they quit over feeding her.
